The Yorkshire Water team created a garden from scratch including a global garden and a sensory garden.Together with pupils, teachers and parents, John Parker and his team created from scratch a global garden and a sensory garden which will give pupils the opportunity to gain hands-on learning experiences and bring to life the differences in ecosystems around the globe. The gardens feature three different sections: the team recreated the North American prairies by using drought-tolerant plants such as long grasses and perennials which can survive in Britain's climate; in another area, a jungle scene was developed by planting trees and plants with huge leaves next to a winding path so pupils will feel like they're exploring the jungle; and, in the third area, a Japanese garden will be a tranquil place, sparsley planted with magnolias and short grasses and boasting its own pergoda.
An area of the grounds was specially selected for a sensory garden. The volunteers built raised beds which pupils will plant with herbs and spices allowing them to taste, smell and feel different plants for themselves. Team leader for the challenge and IT professional at Yorkshire Water, John Parker, said: "Creating a One Million Green Fingers garden is a great way for Yorkshire Water to give something back to the local community. | |
